Thunderhill March 11-12th 2006
This weekend would be the season opener for GTI-Cup  with just a three car GTi field.... Carlos SuarezScott Neville and the Shed Racing duo of Tom Aiken and Ron Swett.  Weather for the weekend would be the big factor for this race weekend...cold and rain conditions were forecast.  Saturday morning dawned cold (low 30s) and cloudy but luckily no rain!  Group A would be the second group out on the track following the Porsche Racing Club.  The cold track proved a bit of a challenge since it took about four laps to get our Toyo RA-1s working decently.  No problems were encountered as the GTI-Cup drivers were getting their track legs back on after a few months away from racing.  Additionally, Carlos was breaking in his new MkII GTI-Golf and getting the feel for this new race car which he had just finished preparing the Thursday before the race.

Saturday's qualifying session saw Ron grabbing pole with a 2:16.03 Scott took second with a 2:16.46 and Carlos a 2:20.58.   Race Group A for the weekend would consist of Factory Five Cobras (FFC), SU's, RSR's, Pro7s, Honda Challenge, and new Performance Touring group sedans.   We would do a standing start followed by a flying start of FFC and SU cars.  As usual, the GTIs were gridded in the back of the standing start grid, which is the way we prefer it.  We positioned ourselves about 10 car lengths behind the front pack in hopes of avoiding any problems which tend to occur with standing starts.....although we had distanced ourselves from the rest of the pack, at the green flag drop we quickly accelerated and caught the pack of cars in front of us by the time we reached the starters stand and we were getting mixed up with traffic out of Turn 1.  Click here to check out the a video clip from Ron's in-car camcorder of the standing start  Scott ended up getting ahead of Ron and Carlos and passed a few cars during the first lap...distancing himself between Ron and Carlos. On the second lap Carlos had a close encounter with an overly aggressive BMW M3 in Turn 8...he got dive-bombed and had to drive off into the weeds to avoid hitting the BMW.  Ron captured the dive-bomb with his in-car camera.  Click here to see the clip.  Luckily Carlos kept his car the rubber side down...but mud had mucked up his front suspension causing vibrations.  Scott led the race from flag to flag finishing 22 seconds ahead of Ron and 48 seconds ahead of Carlos.  Fast race laps were as follows:  Scott 2:15.46,  Ron 2:16.57 and Carlos 2:19.19.

Sunday we woke up to cold low-hanging dark and rain-threatening clouds.  Race groups A, C (Legends, T-Roadsters, B-Grands) + all the Enduro cars were the first groups out on a cold but dry track.  With the cloud cover the temps were slightly warmer in the morning...official low for Sunday was 35F and the high was 44F.  No problems for anyone for the morning practice session...a bit crowded but dry and cold.  The rain had started by our qualifying session so we headed out with treaded tires...the FWD cars had a field day passing Spec Miata and FF Cobras during quals....for the RWD high HP cars the rain was not welcome as at least 3 FF Cobras spun off the track during qualifying.  Good grip with our FWD cars could be found driving off the racing line in the areas when dry are full of marbles.  Scott grabbed pole with a 2:38.01, Carlos second with a 2:39.98 and Tom close behind with a 2:40.25.   By the time of our race (11:20AM) things had dried up but the clouds still looked threatening.  See pre-grid photo below:

Carlos and Scott decided to leave their full-tread TOYOs on while Shed Racing did a last minute switch to shaved fronts...(a good decision it turns out).  We had a confused start...as we were suppose to have a flying start after the lead pack of Honda Challenge cars were to do a standing start...but the entire pack had staged like we were all going to do a standing start.  We ended up jumping the start with the green flag drop that was meant for the HC group.  We accelerated and had to put on the brakes as we came up to the back of the Pro7s.  A second green flag drop and we were off...right on the tails of the Pro7s.   In any event...Scott ended up in the early lead with Tom on his tailpipe followed by Carlos in a real close 3rd place....this was shaping up to be a good GTI-Cup race and we held this close racing until about lap 4 when Scott's tranny decided to act up and would not shift out of 3rd gear exiting Turn 11...by the time he coaxed it into 4th...Tom had passed him but he managed to stay ahead of Carlos....next lap same tranny problem at the same location but this time it stayed in 3rd and wasn't leaving 3rd.

Scott limped back to the paddock while Carlos gave chase to Tom.  With only a few laps left in the race...Carlos made the mistake of passing Tom out of turn 9 during a local yellow....he gave back position to Tom after he realized his mistake.  This left about two laps left in the race...with Carlos chasing Tom.  Tom held Carlos off and took the win only 1.6 seconds ahead of Carlos. Fast race laps were as follows:  Tom 2:19.42, Carlos 2:19.49 and Scott 2:20.43.
