Saturday: Saturday's race Scott Neville grabbed pole with a qualifying time of 2:18.810 followed by Dave Pina with a 2:18.911 with Carlos close behind with a 2:18.942.
Saturday's
Grid
This put us on the grid next to each other...which is how we wanted it. The green flag dropped with Carlos and David quickly getting by Scott as the pack of cars sorted themselves out in Turn 2. The GTIs hung together like a mini freight train through the first lap...each doing their 3-wheel balancing act (normal for GTI-Cup cars) through Turns 3 and 5 to the delight of fellow competitors (we talked to one of the 2nd Gen Mazda RX7 racers (PS-1) who apparently hadn't seen Rabbit GTIs in action before and really liked the 3-wheeling circus we were doing). David and Scott somehow both got by Carlos and by Turn 5 David was leading Scott by a car length and Carlos glued on Scott's rear bumper.

Pina leads Scott Neville and Carlos Suarez on the approach to Turn 14
The next lap Scott and Carlos both get by David in Turn 2...they took advantage of David as he let a faster car go by. By the time they are at Turn 5 Scott leads Carlos by one car length with Dave behind Carlos by about 5 car lengths (see photo below):

Having Fun in Turn 3
Scott leads for only a lap and 1/2 until he gets off track in Turn 1 due to a inside passing RX7, Carlos takes full advantage and passes Scott in Turn 2. Scott manages to keep 2nd place with David close behind. Then David manages to pass both Scott and Carlos to lead once again. His lead ended with a mistake in Turn 5...now Carlos leads with Scott close behind. David catches up with Scott and on lap 9 or 10 makes a classic out braking pass on Scott in Turn 14. The remainder of the race David is chasing Carlos and Scott is chasing David. On the last lap, Carlos is ahead of David and Scott by at least 10 car lengths, David is in second place and Scott is on David's rear bumper. Approaching Turn 14, Scott tries to return the out braking pass favor to David but is carrying too much speed and ends up skidding and banging his rear driver's side bumper into David's passenger side door.....David maintains control and position and takes the 2nd place win. Fastest lap time during the race were: Carlos 2:17.3 David 2:17.7 and Scott 2:18.1. This was close, exciting road racing at its best. Perhaps the best compliment we received was at the NASA Saturday BBQ after the race, Jerry Kunzman (NASA CEO) told Dave and Scott (when they submitted their body-contact incident forms) that the GTI-Cup cars put on the best race of the day.
Sunday: We were hoping for a repeat of Saturday's close racing but it was not to be unfortunately. Carlos grabbed pole with a 2:17.7, David took second with a 2:18.7 and Scott had a 2:20.4. At the drop of the green flag, Carlos jumped out in front followed by a Mazda RX7.....Scott got the jump on David at the start and by Turn 2 was in second place with David glued to Scott's rear bumper. The RX7 passed Carlos and by the second lap Carlos had at least a 5-10 car lead over Scott, with David still glued to Scott's bumper. At Turn 10, David decided to use some of his SCCA passing experience and do another out braking pass on Scott. David did not get far enough to claim the turn and, as Scott made his turn in, David's car got squirrelly and he went off track resulting in a bent rim and a flat front tire. Unfortunately, David got to sit out the rest of the race in his car the hot sun. By this time Carlos was pulling time on Scott and Scott could not chase him down. Carlos took first, Scott second place and David third. Fastest race laps for Sunday were: Carlos 2:17.7, Scott 2:19.0 and David 2:21.8.
