David Pina could not make qualifying as he had to work part day Saturday but made it to the track (after having a flat tire on his trailer) in time for the race.
Sunday's
Grid On Our Way to a Standing Start - Count'em Seven Bunnys!
NASA Race Officials surprised everyone with the announcement of a standing race start as opposed to our usual flying start. The GTIs would be grided next to on another at the rear of the the first standing start wave. Behind us in the next start wave would be the group of eight vary fast Super Unlimited cars. Click Here for a Shed Racing video clip of the standing start (56K warning!...9MB Download). The green flag dropped with Joe taking first with Scott on his bumper through Turn 2...by the time the bunch made it to Turn 3 (see photo below) Joe had a slight lead with Dan Pina moving up to second, Scott in third followed by Carlos, Don and Tom. David Pina was late getting to the grid and by the time the main pack of Rabbits were at Turn 5 Dave was at Turn 15 and coming on to the main straight. As the Rabbits sorted themselves our at Turn 6 Joe leads followed by Dan, Scott, Don, Carlos and Tom. (BTW..Dan's Rabbit got fixed before the start of the main race. A faulty wire to the fuel injection system was to blame. This particular mechanical gremlin has plagued Dan since he acquired the car last season...nice to see Dan back in full action with his car! )

Joe lead the first lap with Dan in second followed by Scott in third with Don and Carlos battling for forth then Tom in the sixth position. By Turn 6 on lap 2 Joe was still leading by a few car lengths, with Dan still in second Scott right on Dan's bumper with Don and Carlos breathing up Scott's tailpipe. Scott gained a little momentum exiting Turn 6 and squeezed by Dan in Turn 8 to take second place. Dan missed a shift allowing Don & Carlos to pass him. Don was now pestering Scott for second place while Joe held a conformable lead of about 10 car lengths. Don got by Scott in Turn 5 on lap three and Carlos fell back with an intermittent electrical problem and was passed back by Dan thus gaining back forth place. Eventually David Pina worked his way up the field and was able to get by Tom and Carlos. The checkered flag saw Joe first, Don second, Scott third, Dan forth, David fifth, Carlos sixth and Tom seventh. Individual fastest race laps were as follows: Joe 2:17.24, Don 2:16.26, Scott 2:17.63, Dan 2:20.15, David 2:21.12, Carlos 2:18.23 and Tom 2:24.61.
Sunday For Sunday's race Joe grabbed pole again with a 2:15.52. Don was second with a 2:16.85 followed by David with a 2:17.70 then Carlos with a 2:18.09. Scott was next with a 2:19.28. Rookies Calvin and Ron qualified with a 2:19.36 and a 2:19.78 respectively. Sunday's race would again see a standing start. At the
start Joe grabbed the lead followed by Don, Carlos, Calvin, Ron and Scott
last. David thought he had a mechanical problem and held back at
the start holding Scott back (see the Shed
Racing video). David pulled off and parked by Turn 1 and DNF'd.
By Turn 2 Don was able to get by Joe as Joe was stuck behind a slower car
and by Turn 9 the running order was: Don first, Joe second, Carlos third,
Calvin forth, Ron fifth and Scott sixth. By Turn 10 on the first
lap Scott passed Ron and was now in fifth. On the beginning of Lap
3 he was glued to Calvin's bumper exiting Turn 15 leading on to the straight
and was setting up for a draft pass only to have to back off when the starter
stand posted a double yellow caution for a PS2 Capri that blew its engine
in Turn 5 spilling a trail of oil. Don was now in first followed
by Joe, Carlos, Calvin, Scott and Ron. During the caution on Lap
4 Joe's car broke a front wheel hub/bearing which sidelined him at Turn
2. Scott's car also broke a hub during the yellow coming out of Turn
11. He was able to limp back to the paddock with a badly shaking
front end. The order held until the end of the race with Don placing
first, Carlos second, Calvin third and Ron forth (who was doing a good
job trying to reel in Calvin on the final lap). Fast race laps were
as follows: Don 2:15.75,
Carlos 2:16.99,
Calvin 2:19.97,
Ron 2:19.38,
Joe 2:16.14,
Scott 2:19.77
and David was DNF with no race laps recorded. Good show by rookies
Calvin and Ron! For Sunday's podium winners NASA got out the champagne
and trophy girls. Thanks NASA for another great weekend of racing!
